Today is International Day of Happiness! Even though it sounds like one of the easiest things in the world, being happy can be an incredibly difficult thing to achieve long-term. But you don’t have to let everyday stresses, worries and problems throw a dark shadow over your life. To help bring a smile to your face and give your mood a boost, we’ve studied how to be happier and created this list of 4 ways to be happier today.
4 ways to be happier today
Lower your stress levels
If your work or home life is particularly stressful, explore ways you can make it more relaxing. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, have a word with your boss about re-evaluating your responsibilities or ask a colleague to give you a hand so you don’t feel like you’re doing everything yourself. If it’s your home life that’s causing you stress, ask your family for help where you need it and incorporate self care activities into your daily schedule.
Some people find small toys, like this fidget cube, incredibly helpful for reducing their stress levels and managing anxiety. Give one a try!
Find a workout you love
We all know how important exercise is, especially when it comes to happiness. Just 20 minutes of working out is scientifically proven to increase endorphins and reduce stress hormones, leaving you feeling great for the following 12 hours! But not everyone loves hitting the gym or going for a run. Instead of forcing yourself to do a workout you hate, find an exercise regime that you enjoy so much you’ll look forward to doing it every day.

Do something you’re good at
Whether it’s cooking, dancing, singing or something else entirely, doing something you’re good at is an instant way to boost your happiness. Being successful and achieving something (no matter how small!) is a guaranteed way to make you feel so much better. Just try to avoid doing something that makes you feel great at the time, but bad afterwards, such as eating too much or lounging in front of the TV all day.
If you don’t know what you’re good at, work on finding a new hobby that you enjoy. Try all sorts of things until you find one you love that you’re good at.
Ignore your negative thoughts
Whenever a negative thought pops into your head, remember that it’s just that – a thought, not the truth. If you find yourself saying that you’re no good or you’re not achieving anything, tell that inner voice to shush and replace it with a positive thought. Tell yourself you’re working on becoming a better person and you’re on the road to success. Looking at the positives in any situation is one of the easiest ways to be happier and can totally change your outlook on life forever.
