It’s easy to fall into the trap of living your life for other people. Whether you want to make your family proud at home or please your boss at work, most of us at some point forget what’s really important and focus on what others expect from us – not what we expect from ourselves. If you’re caught in this trap, here are seven ways to live life on your own terms.
7 Ways to Live Life On Your Own Terms
1. Read more
Many of the world’s most important people read a significant amount every day. They dedicate hours each week to learning new skills and developing their talents. Taking just 15 minutes each morning to read something uplifting and informative will really change you. Do this every day and over 6 months you’ll think and see the world much differently. You’ll discover new connections between different topics and expand your knowledge greatly.
2. Start a journal
It might sound childish, but trust me on this one. Starting a journal and writing just 2-3 lines in it each day is one of the best ways to live life on your own terms. A private journal provides you with a means of making sense of your emotions, improving your creativity, helping you envision the future you want to create and improve your writing skills.
3. Make a bucket list
It’s easy to design your ambitions around your life. But it’s much more fun and satisfying to design your life around your ambitions. Imagine you only have 30 days to live. What will you do in those 30 days? Write them down in a bucket list then get to work crossing them off. It’s important you stop pretending like you’re going to live forever and actually start living your life.
4. Unplug from the internet
With social media, it’s easy to think we’re being social and making personal connections when we’re chatting to people online. But the strongest connections are made in person, face-to-face. Whether you do it once a week or once a month, avoid the internet for 24 hours and spend that time reconnecting with your friends and family. If you have to, turn off your notifications so you don’t feel tempted to check your phone.
5. Do one thing every day that scares you
This quote is just as valid to day as when Eleanor Roosevelt originally said it. You don’t need to do something big like a bungee jump. The task can be as little as making a phone call, asking a question or talking to a stranger. As long as it gets you out of your comfort zone, you’re on track to beginning to live life on your own terms. Remember – the anticipation of the event is always worse than the even itself.
6. Change your sleeping pattern
The benefits of going to bed early and waking up early are almost too numerous to count. Those who follow this sleeping pattern are more proactive, anticipate problems more effectively, are better planners, are holistically healthier, get better sleep and are more optimistic. All these things are fantastic characteristics to help you live life on your own terms.
7. Kick your caffeine habit
You might think that you perform better with caffeine, but the truth is that you don’t. If you consume caffeine regularly, whenever you drink it you’re just getting back to your ordinary state – not a heightened, more productive state. Ditch the caffeine and replace it with sufficient sleep, healthy eating, exercise and motivation and you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.
