Fears come in all kinds of forms. Whether it’s a fear of flying, a fear of confrontation or a fear of the unknown, we all have to deal with fear on a regular basis throughout our lives. Fear is such a powerful emotion that it often overrides all other feelings and even logic. Meaning no matter how brave we are, fear usually prevails. But there are steps you can incorporate into your daily life to help you take back control. If you want to learn how to overcome fears and be truly fearless, follow the 5 actions below.
How to successfully overcome fears
1. Acknowledge your fear
The first step to successfully overcome fears is acknowledging they exist. Really think about what it is you’re scared of and the reasons behind it. Did you have a negative experience in the past that has fuelled your fear? Are you worried about an unpredictable outcome? When you fully understand your fear, you’re that little bit closer to conquering it.

2. Understand how it impacts your life
If you don’t fully understand the negative impact your fear has on your life, you run the risk of putting off overcoming your fears and never conquering them. Think about how free you would be if you didn’t have your fear and let that be your motivation moving forward. For example, if you’re scared about meeting new people, concentrate on how many wonderful friends and fantastic experiences you’d have if you overcame that fear.
3. Take baby steps
Unless you’re feeling very confident, don’t tackle the biggest, scariest part of your fear first. Instead, take baby steps and focus on getting there in the end. For example, if you’re scared about speaking in public, start by making a short speech to yourself in the mirror. When you’re comfortable doing that, move onto making a speech to a family member you trust and then a couple of supportive friends. Work your way up until you’re courageous enough to tackle your main fear and speak in front of a large crowd.
4. Picture the scene in a calm way
If you’re worried about an upcoming event, you’ll likely get stressed, anxious and scared whenever you think about it. Instead of letting fear take over, give yourself a few minutes to relax in a place you feel most comfortable and picture yourself in the scenario you’re worried about. But instead of picturing yourself being scared, imagine yourself being calm throughout the entire scene and a successful result at the end. This will prime your mind to instantly feel more relaxed when the scene happens for real.
